Abstract
Anaerobic bacteria, the most common organisms colonizing the human body surface, are increasingly recognized as important pathogens. The authors reviewed both the clinical and bacteriologic data of 1,354 anaerobic cultures at the Youngdong
Severance
Hospital during the period of April 1983 to March 1992. Among the 2,011 isolates 42.0% were gram-negative bacilli and 37.6% were gram-positive cocci. The most frequent isolates, one third of all anaerobes isolated, were the B. fragilis group
organisms.
The frequent sources of isolation were specimens from the abdomen and head and neck.
